Seventh Man

 If you've been following Immanuel volleyball this year, you know that our Lady Lancers are in the Regional finals this Saturday, 7:00pm, October 21, at Marshfield Columbus vs. the #1 ranked D4 team in the state. Our girls played them tough in a tourney earlier this year. I'm not here to talk sports, per se, but rather the "seventh player on the floor" each night. Regardless of whether the match is on the road or at home, our Lady Lancers have some extra energy provided by their fans. 

In the words of Coach Joe Lau regarding our fans, "You were the 7th person on the court tonight. Our girls definitely fed off the energy you brought. You're the best fans out there! Keep it up!" It is not just from our own folks we've heard positive feedback. Over the course of the last several years, opposition fans and officials have echoed those same thoughts. Last night two different parents from Assumption commented that our students were much appreciated, creating an awesome high school sports atmosphere. The officials echoed those thoughts. From our AD Dave Rodebaugh: "The officials told me that they really appreciated your cheering and how positive it was." 

Principal Gullerud just shared this: "Dear Students, I just got off the phone with the dad of #10 from Assumption. He called to share that you were the best student section he has ever seen in high school sports. He said you had awesome cheers and were very well mannered. He shared that it was a bitter-sweet loss, but he will be praying for our team and might drive up with his family to see the game in Marshfield on Saturday. Thank you for representing Immanuel, our school and our Savior, so well. Looking forward to Saturday night!"

Handling the Heat!

There was a first on campus this week. Due to the high 90's temperature, the dorms became almost too much to handle. As a result, students in both dorms where given the option of sleeping in air conditioning. The girls from South Hall spent the night in the Academic Center, which one student commented that AC now stands for both "air conditioning" and "Academic Center." All but six of the boys in North Hall carried mattresses to the Common's Lounge to spend the night. Some of the girls saw the boys in a long line headed to Commons looked like a bunch of ants swarming down the hill. The fact that six hardy boys stayed in the dorm meant that the dorm parent, Paul Agenten, also had to spend the night in the near 100 degree apartment. Above and beyond the call of duty. The heat also caused the maintenance guys, Paul Heinze and Brett Lau, to spend a couple days tracking down some heat pump failures. There were ceiling tiles removed and buckets full of condensatio

The Volleyball Program

The Lancer volleyball program is carrying three teams this season. Thirty-eight girls showed up for tryouts. Sixteen of the 19 freshmen girls are playing. In addition to many new players, there are also four new coaches on staff. Prof Mark Kranz and Mrs. Sherry Schierenbeck are coaching the 14-member JV team that has a record number of freshmen on it. In addition to a scrimmage at Mondovi, the JV team has played quads at Memorial in Eau Claire and at Whitehall. With so many new faces, they are still working out how best to use their personnel. The new C-Team coaches this season are Mrs. Jill Tiefel and Miss Erin Franson. Jill was a C-Team coach in the late 90s and has previously coached with Erin in the softball program. This 11-person team has participated in the Mondovi scrimmage and the Whitehall quad. Early Bonding

 Although 3/4th of the student body have known each other for a couple of years, there are close to 40 new students on campus and finding ways to get  everyone comfortable with each other can be a challenge. Obviously over time that happens naturally, but this year, the heat wave had a silver lining. As mentioned in a previous post, during the extremely hot evenings last week, the residents of each dorm found a cooler place to spend the evening with the girls in the AC library and the boys in the Commons lounge. Courtney Agenten, the girls dorm parent, noted that the girls really bonded, being in the same room. I can only imagine the same was true with the boys. So, as usual, the Lord finds ways to make all things work out for our good. One other bonding experience occurred as it does each year when Leave It Better springs into action.
