It was "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!
On the weekend of College Visitors’ Day, November 15-16, the Field House was alive with songs of bankers and chimney sweeps, in the Theatre Guild’s production of Mary Poppins, directed by collegians George Carstensen and Trinity Mayhew. It was much enjoyed by both the Friday and Saturday audiences. One of the things contributing to its good reception was the apparent joy with which the cast and crew presented the musical. The costumes, once again crafted by Laila Fleischer, were dazzling and certainly added to the fun that the students displayed in their presentation. Some of the same names were found listed under both cast and crew, which suggested to this viewer that there were no prima donnas under the spotlights those nights.
When some involved in the production were asked what part of the musical they liked the best, instead of picking a particular scene, one representative said that it was working together with all the different grade levels toward a common goal. In addition to the joy of such interaction, it brought the chance to develop skills in working together and appearing before groups of people that might serve students well in future ministries and joint endeavors.
All in all, it was a fitting tip-of-the-top to another successful College Visitors’ Day weekend. Three cheers to the Theatre Guild!
